Jim and I love movies, so we decided to do a movie project: every week, watch one film about (and filmed in) a different state. I’ll record our notes here.
First up: Alabama (Selma)
Category: Historical Drama
“It is unacceptable that they use their power to keep us voiceless.” –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Three words to describe this film/state: Negotiate, Demonstrate, Resist
Best ‘Extra’: Angry Marcher, played by Dexter Tillis
State recipe we tried this week: Pork Chops with Creamy Mustard Noodles
Character for whom I’d like to create earrings (hereafter referred to as ‘Earring Inspo Character’): Coretta Scott King
Other Notes: A powerful film, learned a lot. My world and American history knowledge is shamefully atrocious…ask me anything about art history, but my lack of history knowledge otherwise will forever keep me off Jeopardy. We have a new appreciation for the people of the Deep South and the incredible struggles many went through to obtain basic human rights. This country still has a long way to go in many respects. I know it’s cliché, but everyone should see this film.
