Week 17: Kentucky (Coal Miner’s Daughter)
Quote of Interest:
“That little lady sings her hind end off!”
Three words to describe this film/state: Coal to Diamonds
- Redhead at Tootsie’s, played by Jackie Lynn Wright
- Bidder at Pie Auction, played by Russell Varner
- Woman with Doll, played by Alice McGeachy
State food/recipe to try: My mom’s Kentucky Fried Chicken family recipe
Earring Inspo Character: Loretta Lynn
Other Notes: We’d never seen this movie before and loved it; we’ve been enjoying Southern biopics a lot down here in our first South Carolina year. My mom has family in Kentucky, and they have their own delicious fried chicken recipe. If you didn’t warsh things in our house growing up, they probably weren’t truly clean. We loved the story, the songs, the era, the regional history and dialects, and the fact that both (Academy-Award winner) Sissy Spacek and Beverly D’Angelo actually sang the songs in this film. I have to say that Tommy Lee Jones’s dye job was one of the worst I’ve ever seen, though. I think a trip to Nashville is in our near future.
